Robin Pearce 1953-2001

We regret to announce that Robin, one of the founder members of the Kings Head Chess Club, died suddenly on 17 October after a long period of ill health.

Robin was an active chess player and organiser from his junior days in Cornwall to his stewardship of the Kings Head 4NCL team. He was the youngest ever Cornish Champion (until Micky Adams took that achievement from him) and was President of Cambridge University Chess Club when it was by far the strongest club in the country.

Robin was involved with the Kings Head from its earliest days, when a small group of friends met to play chess over a drink, to the days when the club became the largest in the country with well over 100 members. He captained various teams at different times and was very proud of having captained the first team to the London League title with a perfect score (11 wins from 11 matches). Robin also helped organise the Porchester Hall tournament for many years and was instrumental in the club entering a team in the 4NCL.

As well as chess-related activities, Robin contributed greatly to the social side of the club and will be missed by all those who knew him, both chess players and the wider circle of friends from the old "snug-bar" days of the Kings Head.

Here is a lovely game from Robin played in the 4NCL.
